Meet Claudia Potok. Claudia is in her last year of her undergraduate studies (BSc in Geomatics Engineering) at the University of Calgary and has taken employment with Midwest Surveys for three consecutive summers. Like many students, Claudia entered her undergraduate unsure of what career path she may follow. Claudia soon found her passion in geomatics, because of the diversity of the field itself, as well as the opportunities for professional growth.
Claudia knew that she wanted wide experience in a variety of jobs throughout Western Canada but wanted to keep her home base in Calgary. Claudia was a great fit for our Calgary office as crews are dispatched from Calgary to various locations throughout B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan. Claudia explains, “A medium-sized company was also attractive for me, as it meant that there are opportunities for me to advance in my career, and at the same time I would get to know a lot of fellow coworkers.”
Claudia stresses how much she has learned from the Party Chiefs that she had the opportunity to work with and that she has gained an invaluable amount of knowledge and experience working as an assistant. She was faced with a real variety of jobs during her time from large pipeline projects to scouting and cutting wellsites in thick bush, to performing river crossing surveys for pipelines. “The party chiefs I have worked with are all very passionate about their work” Claudia explained, “I have gained a lot of experience in assisting them and because of that, I look forward to returning to Midwest upon my graduation.”
Claudia notes one of the most memorable days on the job was when she was involved in the preliminary work in scouting a wellsite and access road near Nordegg in August 2013. “I was lucky enough to return to the same site again in May 2014 to see a finished road and a busy, active wellsite where two well centres had already been drilled.” Claudia explained, “It was really satisfying and neat to see how our hard work had paid off.”
